Names and Seals

The arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 marked a turning point for Japan, leading to the Meiji Restoration and the end of the feudal system. As the new bureaucratic state emerged, it mandated that every citizen select a unique surname, resulting in a fascinating array of names, some quite whimsical. This transformation also necessitated the adoption of personal seals, or hanko, reflecting the profound societal changes of the time.
