Ivory Trade Legacy

The demand for ivory surged in Japan during the 70s and 80s, primarily for producing Hanko, with staggering estimates suggesting over 2 million produced annually. Since 1970, more than 260,000 elephants have been killed to meet this demand. Despite an international ban on ivory trade in 1989, Japan's domestic market remains active, allowing the sale of pre-ban ivory, which continues to impact elephant populations today.
