  • Installation

The installation of guerrilla signs is a meticulous process, as demonstrated by Richard Ancrum's project on the 110 freeway in Los Angeles. Richard, an artist, crafted a sign to correct a wayfinding error that had long bothered him. He meticulously matched the existing signage, even using a thin glaze of gray to blend his creation with the aged signs around it 1. To install it, he donned a disguise and planned the operation with precision, akin to a bank heist, ensuring everything was in place for a seamless execution 2.

The whole idea was to be sort of a public servant, or actually to show what you can do with artwork. You can put it in plain sight and have a functioning working thing for everyone to use.

Richard's dedication to detail and his guerrilla public service approach highlight the intersection of art and functionality.

    Impact

The impact of Richard's guerrilla signage was significant, passing Caltrans inspection and remaining in place for nearly nine years. Despite the legal implications, Caltrans acknowledged the quality of his work and even incorporated his design ideas into their official signage updates 3. The project exemplifies how guerrilla public service can lead to positive change, though not without controversy.

He did a good job, but we don't want him to do it again. And in fact, he did such a good job that I'd like to offer him a job application.

This story underscores the potential for individual initiative to influence public infrastructure, even if it challenges conventional norms 4.
