Circular Design

Circleville, Ohio, was uniquely designed with a circular grid, inspired by Native American mounds in the area. Sam Greenspan explains that Daniel Dreisbach, a local power broker, established the town in 1810, incorporating the circular earthworks into its layout 1. This design was unusual compared to the typical grid patterns of other towns, resembling a pirate ship's steering wheel with the courthouse at its center 2. Square Conversion

The dissatisfaction with Circleville's circular layout led to its transformation into a square grid. By 1837, residents appealed to the Ohio state assembly for a redesign, resulting in the hiring of the Circleville Squaring Company 2.
