After Japan's surrender, the country is devastated with millions dead and cities destroyed. Amidst the bleak national tenor, Ibuka sees an opportunity to create a company focused on consumer technology. He founds the Tokyo Telecommunications Research Institute, later named Sony, with the goal of providing engineers a stable workplace to pursue their joy in technology.
