  • Early Life

Tobi Lütke's journey from Germany to becoming a tech visionary began with his early fascination with computers. At just six years old, he received a Schneider CPC, igniting his passion for programming and video games 1. His unique path included dropping out of high school to join a German apprenticeship program, where he honed his programming skills at Siemens 2. This unconventional route laid the foundation for his future entrepreneurial endeavors, as notes, "He's highly intelligent. He has this great line in. I think it's on the Knowledge Project podcast where he know, people get upset. They got upset about that tweet about StarCraft. People get upset. Parents get upset if their kids are playing too many video games. Think about it this way. Would you be upset if your kid were playing chess all the time? If I had tweeted about that, would you be vilifying me? And really, what's the difference here?" 1.

    Business Vision

Tobi's vision for Shopify was born out of necessity and innovation. Initially, he created a custom commerce engine for his snowboard business, Snowdevil, using the Rails framework, which he found superior to existing solutions 3. This led to the realization that selling software could be more lucrative than selling snowboards, prompting the pivot to Shopify 4. As highlights, "They spend a year and a half working on the software. Toby is a perfectionist, wants to make sure it's right. And, of course, a big part of that is actually commercializing this. It's one thing to build your own software for your own site. It's another thing to make it plug and play for commercial availability." 3.
