Pastor T.L. Barrett’s Gospel | Broken Record

Musical Roots

Growing up between New York City and Chicago, T.L. Barrett was immersed in a rich musical environment. His father, a guitarist, formed the Barrett Singers, a gospel group that performed alongside the Staples Singers. Barrett's exposure to gospel music was profound, yet he also developed a love for jazz, becoming a jazz pianist by age 17 1. He recalls, "I was mixing the two, preaching the gospel and trying to play jazz music at the same time," highlighting his early ability to blend different musical genres 1.

   

Divine Music

Barrett views music as a divine message, transcending the boundaries of gospel and secular genres. He believes that God's music encompasses all forms, stating, "It's not gospel, it's not secular. It's just music. It's God's music" 2. His approach allowed him to incorporate songs by Earth, Wind & Fire into his gospel programs, emphasizing the spiritual essence of music regardless of its label 2. This philosophy underpinned his goal to inspire young people to achieve success without succumbing to negative influences 3.

   

Recording Journey

Barrett's recording career began with a desire to share his music beyond his congregation. He approached Paul Serrano at Serrano Studios, leading to a contract with Stax Records 4. Despite initial obscurity, his music gained recognition decades later, fulfilling his promise to young people that they could become famous without compromising their values 3. Reflecting on this journey, Barrett maintains, "True believers cannot be surprised. You live in expectation instead of agitation," underscoring his unwavering faith in his music's impact 3.
