Shipping and Cloud Brightening

Emissions from shipping have been found to brighten clouds over the North Atlantic, reflecting more sunlight and potentially cooling the atmosphere. This phenomenon is easier to observe over oceans due to the absence of complex land formations, making it a unique area for studying the effects of sulfate pollution. However, the health implications of sulfate emissions, particularly their impact on air quality, prompted the International Maritime Organization to implement regulations in 2020 to reduce sulfate in shipping fuel.
