Which is more important: low LDL or low total cholesterol to HDL ratio?
Typically, my LDL is between 85 and 100. Recently, a doctor recommended that I aim for lower values due to other risk factors. My question is whether it’s right to focus on LDL alone, or is the total cholesterol to HDL ratio more important?
For example, I know that when I’m on a low-carb diet, both my LDL and HDL go up slightly (and my triglycerides go down—this is known as the lipid triad), but my total cholesterol to HDL ratio stays below 3 and may even decrease a bit more. Is this okay in your opinion, or should I focus on lowering my LDL and add more carbs to my diet?
