The phonograph emerged as a groundbreaking invention in 1877, initially conceived as a business tool rather than a means for music. Edison envisioned it as a way to streamline office tasks, allowing dictation to replace stenographers. Interestingly, while music was a later consideration, the early recordings were far from the quality we expect today.
