I am a CPT and have a question regarding how to optimally introduce cardiovascular training and conditioning for heart health and performance into my strength training routine. I lift weights 4 times per week and am now planning to start adding cardio. The purpose behind adding cardio now is that my friends and I have decided to do a long bicycle adventure this summer of about 1000km on road bikes, from where we live in Finland to a specific part of Norway. My question is: how do you recommend I start with the cardio to best work in my favor for this kind of pursuit? I was talking to my coach about it, and he suggested I start doing a 1-hour longer steady-state session on a bike one of the days, and 30 minutes of some kind of more intense intervals on the other day. So in total, two days of the week would be cardio-focused. Does this sound like a proper approach that you would also recommend? If not, how would you do it, and how would the interval session look?
