Semilwife's Discovery
Samuel Weiss, a junior obstetrician in Vienna, discovered that the maternal mortality rates from childbirth were astronomically high in one ward and much lower in another. He found that the variable causing this was that in the first ward, run by doctors, there was a high mortality rate in childbirth.
