Trauma and Narrative

The overuse of the term trauma may be detrimental to mental health, as research shows that individuals who do not internalize their childhood experiences as traumatic tend to thrive in adulthood. Conversations around trauma-informed care often overlook that not everyone benefits from discussing their past; some may find healing by focusing on the present and future instead. Repeatedly revisiting traumatic experiences can sometimes exacerbate pain rather than alleviate it.
