Learning to Live with Freedom

Brink discusses the cultural learning curve after the 60s, where traditional rules broke down and new choices opened up. Initially, social conservatives argued that the increase in cultural freedom led to social breakdown. However, starting in the 1990s, social indicators such as crime rates, divorce rates, and welfare dependency started to decline. Brink attributes this to people learning how to deal with their freedom and embracing new moral sensibilities and rules. The world is now freer, but people are getting better at living with that freedom and avoiding its pitfalls.
