Origins of the Library

The Library of Congress, a unique institution, traces its roots back to a proposal by Madison in 1783 for a library to support Congress. As the new capital was established in Washington, Congress faced the challenge of starting from scratch, leading to the allocation of funds for an initial collection of 740 books and three maps, all sourced from London. This marked the beginning of a monumental resource that would grow to become one of the largest libraries in the world.
