The islands were renamed as a quirky nod to refreshment, but their history is marked by hardship and strategic military importance. After the British annexed the island due to fears of a French rescue of Napoleon, it became a stopover for ships, albeit not on any major trade routes. The community faced numerous challenges, including a tragic loss at sea and a looming famine during a harsh winter.
