Hong Kong's Early History

Evidence suggests human settlement in Hong Kong dates back 35,000 to 39,000 years, with early inhabitants likely being Austronesians. The region became part of China in 214 BC under the Qin dynasty, but it wasn't until the southern Song dynasty that it gained significance, as the royal court was established in Kowloon. Despite early European contact, particularly with the Portuguese, Hong Kong remained a minor trading hub for centuries.
