Political Party Origins

The emergence of political factions was inevitable, as even early leaders recognized the tendency for humans to organize into groups. Washington's unanimous election highlighted the nation's divisions, while the informal caucus system of the late 18th century limited citizen input in presidential nominations. By the early 19th century, the flaws of this "King caucus" system became apparent, leading to a significant shift in how candidates were selected and the eventual decline of the Federalist Party.
