Evolution of Primaries

The early 20th century saw the gradual introduction of primaries, starting with Florida in 1901, but their adoption was slow and often non-binding. The chaotic 1968 Democratic National Convention highlighted the flaws in the existing system, leading to a push for more binding primaries. By the early 1990s, both major parties embraced a stronger primary system, significantly lengthening presidential campaigns and changing the political landscape.
