Origins of Madrid

Madrid's unique location on the Masseta Central, away from major rivers or coastlines, raises questions about its development as a significant city. Initially, there was no permanent settlement until the Islamic era, when a fortress was built by the emir of Cordoba to maintain control over the region. This fortress, known as Mayrit, laid the foundation for what would become modern Madrid.
