Colosseum's Dark History

The Colosseum, often misunderstood due to its name, served as a grand arena for gladiatorial games and public spectacles, witnessing an estimated 400,000 deaths throughout its history. Despite its glory, the structure faced decline after the fall of the Western Empire, transforming into a site for homes, shops, and even a cemetery. Significant damage from earthquakes in the 14th century left its exterior in ruins, giving it the iconic appearance we see today.
