The Origins of Plutonium

Plutonium, with its atomic number 94, was discovered by Glenn and named after the planet Pluto. While often thought of as synthetic, trace amounts of plutonium do occur naturally, primarily from uranium decay. The significant production of plutonium began after the first controlled nuclear fission reaction in 1942, allowing for its physical properties to be studied in depth.
