Particle Accelerator History

The cancellation of the SSC in 1993 left a significant gap in high energy physics, prompting CERN to take the lead with the development of the Large Hadron Collider. This ambitious project, approved in 1995, would become the largest particle accelerator in the world, designed to explore the fundamental building blocks of matter through hadron collisions. With its impressive 27 km circumference, the LHC represents a monumental leap in our understanding of particle physics.
