The Great Debate

The early 20th century saw a pivotal debate over the nature of spiral nebulae, with Harlow arguing they were part of our galaxy and Herbert asserting they were distant galaxies. Ultimately, Herbert's observations proved correct, leading to the understanding of galaxies as separate systems. Edwin later categorized these galaxies into various types, revealing the vast diversity and scale of the universe, from dwarf galaxies to supergiants containing trillions of stars.
