Rise of the Wall

Tensions escalated as East German leaders, under pressure from the Soviet Union, decided to construct a wall to stem the exodus of citizens to the West. Initially dismissed as a possibility, the abrupt construction on August 13, 1961, transformed the landscape of Berlin and symbolized the deepening divide of the Cold War. Despite the East German government’s claims of protecting against fascism, the wall's defenses were clearly aimed inward, reflecting a desperate attempt to control its own population.
