The Origin of Bowls

The term "bowl" originally described college football games before the NFL adopted it for their all-star game in 1951. The infamous Ice Bowl remains the coldest NFL game ever played, while the Super Bowl's name emerged informally from a playful connection to a children's toy. As the AFL gained traction, the two leagues eventually merged, leading to the first Super Bowl matchup, which pitted the NFL's Green Bay against the AFL's Kansas City.
