Festival of Reason

The Festival of Reason, held in 1793, transformed Notre Dame into a stage for a celebration that blended philosophy and pagan imagery, sparking widespread condemnation. While initially an attempt to promote revolutionary ideals, the event backfired, leading to a backlash against its excesses. Robespierre, who favored a more traditional belief system, ultimately dismantled the cult, paving the way for the establishment of the Cult of the Supreme Being as the state religion.
