Rediscovering Pompeii

Over centuries, the lost city of Pompeii was gradually rediscovered, beginning with limited excavations in the late 16th century. A significant turning point occurred in 1738 with the discovery of Herculaneum, which led to further explorations and the eventual identification of Pompeii in 1763. Innovative techniques, such as injecting plaster into voids left by decomposed bodies, revealed haunting snapshots of the past, while the fragile carbonized scrolls from Herculaneum opened a rare window into ancient literature.
