Monastic Legacy

The legend of Mount Athos tells of the Virgin Mary's desire to claim the peninsula as her garden, leading to its dedication to her and the exclusion of women. Over the centuries, the region transformed into a monastic haven, surviving various political changes, including the rise of the Ottoman Empire, which initially respected the monks. However, tensions grew in the 17th and 18th centuries as taxes increased and property was seized, marking a significant shift in the relationship between the monks and their rulers.
