The Dunlap Broadside

The Dunlap broadside was an early version of the Declaration of Independence, created before any signatures were added. Although New York hadn’t voted for independence by July 4, it was included in the official version on parchment, signed by Congress members on August 2. Over the years, the Matlack Declaration faced deterioration, leading to preservation efforts that included creating engravings and eventually transferring custody to the Library of Congress.
