Charlemagne's Coronation

Charlemagne’s rise to power marked a pivotal moment in European history, as he was crowned emperor by the pope on Christmas Day in 800. This event symbolized a shift in authority from the Byzantine Empire to the West, following a dramatic power struggle involving Irene, who usurped her son’s throne. Despite his significant role, most historians do not view Charlemagne as the true founder of the Holy Roman Empire, a title that would remain contested until Otto I's coronation in 962.
