Samoan Cultural Heritage

The ancestors of the Samoans, known as the Lapita culture, initiated their journey from Melanesia, establishing trade and communication with nearby islands like Fiji and Tonga. The Samoan Empire, or Tui Manua Confederacy, flourished in the 9th century, influencing the broader Polynesian expansion across the Pacific. The arrival of Europeans in the 18th century marked a significant turning point, beginning with the sighting of Samoa by Dutch explorer Jakob.
