Discovering Everest's Height
Mount Everest, towering at 8,848.86 meters, was identified as the tallest mountain through a challenging survey effort in the 19th century. Initial measurements pointed to Kanchenjunga until an Indian mathematician calculated Everest's true height, leading to its naming after the Surveyor General of India.
