Everest Expeditions History

Early attempts to summit Everest were fraught with tragedy and mystery, including the legendary disappearance of Mallory and Irving. As expeditions continued to struggle, the opening of Nepal to outsiders revealed the importance of local Sherpas, who proved invaluable in high-altitude climbing. The groundwork laid by previous attempts finally set the stage for a successful ascent in 1953.
