Origins of Valentine’s Day

The name Valentine, derived from the common Roman name Valens, is associated with multiple saints and even a pope. While the feast day originally honored St. Valentine, its connection to romance emerged much later, with roots traced back to the wild Roman festival Lupercalia, which celebrated fertility in a rather unconventional manner. The earliest literary link to romance appeared in a poem by Chaucer, marking the beginning of Valentine's Day as we know it today.
