Ibn Battuta, born in 1304 in Tangiers, came from a family of Islamic legal scholars, which likely provided him with a strong education in Islamic law. At 21, he embarked on the hajj to Mecca, a journey that would evolve into an extensive life of travel. His adventures began with a perilous trek across North Africa, often accompanied by caravans for safety.
