Rise and Fall

The Whig Party emerged in the 1830s, initially uniting anti-Jacksonians and defectors from other parties. Despite early successes, internal divisions over slavery led to their decline, culminating in a lack of a presidential candidate by 1856. The party's inability to adapt to the changing political landscape ultimately sealed its fate, paving the way for the ascendance of the Republican Party.
