Roman Military Reforms

The transformation of the Roman army under Marius introduced a more mobile and efficient fighting force. Soldiers were required to carry their own gear, enabling rapid movement and earning them the nickname "Marius mules." Additionally, the shift from the maniple system to the more flexible cohort structure allowed for better coordination and uniformity among troops, enhancing combat effectiveness. Changes to the pilum ensured that Roman soldiers maintained an advantage in battle by preventing their weapons from being easily reused by enemies.
