Origins of the Bicycle

The velocipede, created by a German baron, emerged in the 19th century as a response to the decline of horse populations following the catastrophic eruption of Mount Tambora. Initially a luxury toy for the wealthy, this wooden contraption lacked pedals and gears, leading to its brief popularity. It wasn't until Kirkpatrick developed a mechanical propulsion system in 1839 that the bicycle truly began to evolve into the revolutionary mode of transport we know today.
