Dark Ages Explained

The concept of the Dark Ages emerged long after the fall of the Roman Empire, which officially ended in the West around 476. Despite the decline, the Eastern Roman Empire, known as the Byzantine Empire, continued for nearly a thousand years. The term "Dark Ages" was popularized by Petrarch, who contrasted the classical period's enlightenment with his contemporary era, suggesting that even non-Christian thinkers from antiquity had valuable insights worth acknowledging.
