Origins of the Olympics

The Olympics trace their roots back to ancient Greece, where the first event, the stadion, was held in 776 BC. Initially a male-only competition, the games evolved to include various athletic events and continued until they were outlawed in 393 AD. The modern Olympics were revived in the late 19th century by a French advocate, who aimed to create an international festival celebrating athleticism, leading to the establishment of the International Olympic Committee and the first modern games in Athens in 1896.
