The city of Washington was born from scratch, guided by L'enfant's grid plan with the Capitol at its heart. Despite its ambitious design, the city faced devastation during the War of 1812 when British forces burned key government buildings. As tensions over slavery grew, the west bank of the Potomac, neglected and concerned about potential abolition, successfully petitioned to return to Virginia in 1846.In this clip
