El Gordo Explained

El Gordo, known as the Spanish Christmas lottery, boasts the largest total prize pool in the world, with €2.38 billion awarded in 2020. Unlike typical American lotteries, El Gordo operates on a unique system where each ticket, or biete, costs €200 and is sold primarily through bars and kiosks. With only 100,000 possible numbers, the structure allows for smaller fractions of tickets, called decimos, making it accessible to a broader audience while still delivering substantial winnings.
