Satellite Disaster Recovery

In January 1978, a Soviet satellite reentered the Earth's atmosphere uncontrollably, prompting a secretive alert to the Americans to prevent misunderstandings. The Canadian government launched Operation Morning Light to recover radioactive debris scattered over a vast area, but only a fraction was retrieved. Despite the dangers, most of the radioactive material had decayed by the time it reached the ground, leading to a unique financial claim against the Soviets under international space law.
