The Peshtigo fire remains one of the greatest disasters in American history, claiming between 1,220 to 2,500 lives in a small Wisconsin community. Hot, dry conditions combined with sudden colder temperatures and high winds created a catastrophic firestorm, with temperatures soaring to an estimated 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The intensity of the blaze was so extreme that it generated its own winds, leading to the formation of fire whirls, akin to tornadoes made of flames.
