The Sistine Chapel

The papal chapel, a significant assembly of clergy and laypeople, played a crucial role in religious services during Sixtus IV's reign. Recognizing the need for a new space, Sixtus IV commissioned the construction of the Sistine Chapel, which was completed in 1481 and consecrated just two years later. Despite its monumental importance, the chapel's exterior is notably plain, resembling a typical brick building with no distinct features.
