Decline of the Khmer

The transition from Hinduism to Theravada Buddhism marked a significant shift in the Khmer Empire, altering the king’s role from a divine figure to a protector of the people. Various theories, including climate change and the rise of sea trade, have been proposed to explain the empire's decline. Despite its fall, the Khmer Empire's sophisticated social structure and architectural achievements continue to influence Southeast Asia today, with its cultural legacy still evident in modern practices and beliefs.
