Peanuts, often mistaken for nuts, are actually legumes related to beans and peas. They grow uniquely underground through a process called geocarpi, producing 25 to 50 pods per plant. Recent research reveals that ancient farmers in South America hybridized wild species to create the modern peanut, which was domesticated around 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, primarily in Peru.
