Napoleon's Russian Campaign

The disastrous 1812 invasion of Russia by Napoleon led to a staggering number of casualties at the Battle of Borodino. Following a hollow victory, the French army found Moscow in ruins, prompting a harrowing retreat. In response to this defeat, the Russian Tsar commissioned the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which would later be completed in 1880, coinciding with significant national celebrations and a major exhibition in Moscow.
