Geographic Misnomers

The term "West Indies" is a historical misnomer that reflects the region's colonial past. Originally, Christopher Columbus named the area the West Indies, believing he had reached Asia, which was known as the Indies 2. Gary Arndt clarifies that for the episode's purpose, the West Indies refers to the English-speaking islands that were British colonies post-World War II, including Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The term West Indies is basically a misnomer. Columbus was searching for what was known as the Indies, which was south and Southeast Asia.
